Daisy Update 05/03/10

Since people have been asking about Daisy, I wanted to let you know what has happened. I took her to the vet Monday and he did X-rays on her paw. He came back and said there was nothing wrong with her paw, no breaks, etc. So he took the cast off. I had mentioned when we first went in that I had noticed a pointy bone on her shoulder on the side with the cast. He decided to do X-rays there too and found that her shoulder is dislocated. And he thinks she may have degenerative arthritis (already). Talk about getting the wind knocked out of you.

So here are our options for now...
1. Do surgery and fuse the bones together which the vet said costs about $1500-$2000
2. Have it amputated so she doesn't put pressure on it
3. Put her to sleep

I always said I would NEVER pay that kind of money for an animal, but now that I am in the situation I am not so sure. She has been pure joy since she came to us, even though it has only been 4 days. Because of her, Tye gets out of bed in the morning all by himself without Kevin having to wake him up. Kevin gets up earlier. She is such a sweet and loving puppy. I am soooooooo torn. I never wanted to get a dog so quick after we had to put Emilio to sleep and now we might have to turn around and put the puppy to sleep too. I know she has some pain or else she wouldn't pick her paw up, but she never cries about it, she just picks it up and chases all over the yard and house. She loves to play with Tye and if he lays down on the floor she kisses him all over and then sits on him especially his head! lol They are so cute together and she is my little companion. Wherever I go she follows right behind me.

At this point we are not going to make any decision until we speak to the specialist/surgeon. I want to know if we have an option of putting her in a sling or something so she doesn't put weight on it, but then give her pain meds. Or if, as I am praying, it can actually just be popped back into place and we don't have to worry about too much of this. I have an appt for her next Friday May 14th. We will see then, what our options truly are. In the meantime we let her do what she wants with that paw and give her pain meds morning and night. Keep her in your prayers that the fix is simple so we won't have to put her down.
